Life imitates art at Gallery Aferro.

Kayla Listrano started with Spangle Pop, moved onto Hello, Beautiful and continued “with the fish!”
That is, the cleverly composed colorful cubes of art created by a plume of an artist’s breath.
“They are pretty and fun and almost alive, these fishes,” says Listrano, who lives in West Orange.
She found them at Market on Market, the new monthly art-cum-flea market shepherded by Gallery Aferro once a month on Saturdays at 85 Market St., in the heart of the Downtown Arts District.
Market on Market launched last summer with a vibrant showing from dozens of artisans and vendors of eclectic and arty goods. With a side of free yoga, affordable massage, a cookie sale and wisdom from jazz historian Barbara Kukla, author of Swing City: Newark Nightlife 1925-1950, Market on Market’s debut also marked the calendar for many—including Kayla Listrano—with a monthly must-stop for shopping.
The November 21 Market on Market also will be held at 85 Market St. The pre-Christmas Market on Market, on Saturday, Dec. 19, will move to 73 Market St.
According to the folks behind Gallery Aferro, Market on Market is “modeled after many other fantastic markets – in Trenton, Brooklyn, Beacon and Philadelphia.” The concept is to encourage artisans to bring to the public “handmade, upcycled, recycled and antique items, [as well as] workshops and events” staged on market day.
Market on Market opens at 11 a.m. and runs till 5 or 6 p.m., depending on the day. Vendors bring to the table myriad styles of art and handmade goods, as well as books, records, buttons and pins, wellness and beauty products, tools, architectural elements, musical instruments and salvage.
Yes, it’s art-plus.
