On October 17th, the Newark Celebration 350 Committee (aka NC350) unveiled plans for the yearlong 2016 anniversary party during the Family Fun Festival in Military Park. The event kicked off with the Creation Nation Art and Peace Parade, which featured 30 student-made Animodule sculptures, three marching bands and a drumline making a circuit around the park, in front of the new Prudential headquarters, WBGO, the Robert Treat Hotel and NJPAC. The Creation Nation Parade is powered by the Barat Foundation (baratfoundation.org), which promotes Public Art by the Public. More than 10,000 Newark schoolchildren have expressed their joy and artistic vision in the program over the past eight years.
“People need to know how vibrant and exciting Newark is,” says the foundation’s creative director Athena Barat. “The parade is a political act, one that says we can claim the streets in the name of the children, in the name of art, and for the power of creativity and collaboration.”
The 350th Anniversary celebration will encompass more than 100 events and activities that promote the accomplishments and talents of Newarkers past and present. The NC350 group includes representatives from NJPAC, the Devils, Rutgers–Newark, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the Newark Museum, Newark Public Library, Essex County and various community leaders stakeholders and publications—Radius being one of them.
“The community’s response, interest and desire to be involved has been overwhelming,” says Junius Williams, who co-chairs the committee.
“NC350 will have something for everyone,” adds co-chair John Schreiber, CEO and President of NJPAC. “Throughout the year we’ll be adding events that will be fun and informative, historical and forward-looking.”
