Recognized poets from throughout New Jersey gather for an evening of curated poetry readings and performances, presented as an extension of NJPAC’s participation in the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival. Newark resident and world-class tap dancer Maurice Chestnut accompanies poet Kurtis Lamkin and others from the area in dynamic duets of poetic and tap-dance rhythms.

Newark tap dancer Maurice Chestnut presents Dance Therapy as a part of Symphony Hall’s “Arts on Stage” series at the Black Box Theater. The performance features the New Jersey Tap Ensemble’s Youth M.A.D.E. Stars dancers.

WHAT: Jersey Moves!

Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company kicks off the Jersey Moves! Festival of Dance with the premiere of “Waves.” Virtuosic musicians and dancers push the boundaries of their art forms, accompanied by cellist Jessie Reagen Mann, multi-instrumentalist (and human beat box) Pete List, and recorder player Daphna Mor. The evening also offers the evocative duet “Under My Skin” and the award-winning “Klezmer Sketch,” which inspired her exploration of Jewish gesture, expression, ritual and family.

WHAT: Lessons in Education Reform

The host of Weekend Edition Saturday on NPR moderates the conversation series “Trending with Scott Simon”—which opens with “Lessons in Education Reform” featuring former New York City schools chancellor Joel I. Klein. Klein, the former Chairman and CEO of the media giant Bertelsmann, also served as Assistant U.S. Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and was Deputy White House Counsel to President Bill Clinton. Simon is one of America’s most admired writers and broadcasters. He has won every major award in broadcasting.

WHAT: NJ Speakers Series

WHEN: Thursday • March 19 • 8:00 PM

WHERE: Prudential Hall/NJPAC

David McCullough is the author of Truman, John Adams, and most recently The Greater Journey. The two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award is a gifted storyteller and has narrated several PBS documentaries, including The Civil War and Napoleon, as well as the motion picture Seabiscuit. This series is available as a subscription package only.

WHAT: Sleeping Beauty

Marionetas de la Esquina, a puppet theater company from Mexico, takes a contemporary and whimsical look at the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty. Written by award-winning playwright Amaranta Leyva, this reimagined version depicts the princess as an overprotected daughter looking for a way to break free of her castle walls to search for true love and her true self.

Dan Rather, anchor of the CBS Evening News for 24 years (1981 to 2005) and frequent contributor to 60 Minutes, is now the managing editor and anchor of the cable television news magazine Dan Rather Reports. In 2012, he released his bestseller Rather Outspoken on his life and the state of journalism today. The NJ Speaker Series is available as a subscription package only.

WHAT: Dodge Poetry Festival

WHEN: Friday • April 24 • 8:00 PM

Walt Whitman, William Carlos Williams, Allen Ginsberg, Amiri Baraka and many other influential poets have called New Jersey home. U.S. Poet Laureate (and Long Branch native) Robert Pinsky explores the theme of “Jersey Voices” in the second leg of this three-part Dodge Poetry series.

WHAT: Buddy’s Big Adventure

WHEN: Sunday • April 12 • 1:00 & 4:00 PM

Buddy, Tiny, King and Don star in this interactive trip back in time to an age when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and—as every parent of a preschooler knows—rode in trains. The popular PBS series, which blends fun with lessons on natural history and paleontology, has been transformed into a larger-than-life musical story for the stage, including a full-sized replica of the Dinosaur Train.

WHAT: Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley

WHEN: Saturday • May 9 • 2:00 PM

Jeff Brown’s beloved children’s book, Flat Stanley, is now a musical comedy that explores the value of being different. Stanley Lambchop, flattened by a bulletin board, sees the world through the mail and learns that heroes come in all shapes and sizes.

WHAT: Revelations

Since its debut in 1958, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has performed before an estimated 23 million people in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents—and millions more on television and web broadcasts. The company comes to Newark with programs that include some of their newest works as well as company classics like Ailey’s masterwork, “Revelations”—set to African-American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and holy blues.
